(Brighton, MI) Five unanswered goals secured a 12-10 Concordia victory for women's lacrosse who played Cleary University in their inaugural game Friday afternoon.
The Cardinals trailed 5-7 at halftime and by three with 16:11 to play, but rallied down the stretch to come back and win.
"Our girls just kept fighting in the second half," Coach Amanda Asher said of her team. "Things got a little chippy, but they did not panic and stayed composed. We've been working hard since we all got together this fall, and all the hard work paid off as our girls had a little extra in the tank to rattle off 5 straight goals to finish it."
Playing a man down with the clock at 11:30, Lauren Litogot (SO/Adrian, MI) scored off a free position and then picked up the ensuing draw control, raced down the field, and scored again to tie the game at 10-10. Kayla Owsley (FR/Dexter, MI) came through with her second goal of the game three minutes later to give Concordia their first lead since midway through the first half.
Jessica Russ (FR/Madison, AL) led the Cardinals with three goals and Abigail Turner added a pair including the program's first at the 20:23 mark of the opening half. Rounding out the teams scoring was Grace Stadler (JR/Monroe, MI), Emily Collins (SO/Clinton Township), and Kate Kirchoff (SO/Canton, MI). Samantha Shatrau (FR/Commerce Township, MI) tallied 13 saves in the net and allowed just three second-half Cougar goals.
Asher was proud of the effort from a variety of individuals that contributed to the win.
"This group comes from so many different lacrosse backgrounds and levels of experience, and for them to put it all together in the first game was so impressive. We still have a lot of work and learning to do, but I could not ask for a better first step in the process."
The Cardinals will their first home and first Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference game Wednesday when they host Siena Heights University. The contest is slated to begin at 5:00 p.m. in Cardinal Stadium.
