(Sylvania, OH) Concordia women's basketball beat Lourdes Wednesday and moved back up to fifth place in the Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference with their second straight win. The 73-61 win was the Cardinals second victory over the Gray Wolves this season completing the series sweep.
It took the Cardinals a few minutes to get going and they stayed a shot behind Lourdes for much of the first half. Michelle Murnen scored 8 of her 15 points in the first 20 minutes and provided a spark to put her team in front.
With 3:18 until halftime, the junior knocked down a three-pointer to tie the game at 27. The next time down the floor she hit a second triple to take a lead Concordia would never give up.
CUAA went on a 10-1 run early in the third quarter to build their advantage to 12. Kari Borowiak started the rally with a shot from behind the arc and Murnen capped it with another—her third three of the night.
The Gray Wolves fought their way back and made it a two possession game with three minutes left in regulation. Mia Long responded with a layup in the paint and Concordia combined with 8-10 free throw shooting down the stretch to go up by as many as 14 points.
Borowiak matched Murnen's 15 points and also added six rebounds and six assists. The Cardinals again applied strong defensive pressure and won the turnover battle, 23-14 forcing 15 turnovers in the second half alone.
Concordia is back in action this weekend for the 66th annual Concordia Invitational Tournament. Competing at Concordia Nebraska, CUAA will take on Concordia Chicago in Friday's opening round. Tipoff against the Cougars is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. (EST) in Seward, NE.
