(Chicago, IL) Wrapping up 2016 at the Roosevelt Classic, Concordia women's basketball defeated Governors State University Wednesday evening on the campus of Roosevelt University in Chicago, IL. The 78-69 win improves the Cardinals record to 11-3 this season.
Kari Borowiak (JR/Gaylord, MI) became the 11th Cardinal in program history to score 1,000 points in a career with a layup late in the second quarter. Not done with career milestones, the junior's assist to Shelbea James (FR/Dexter, MI) in the third quarter was her 300th in a Concordia uniform. She is now sixth all-time with 302 assists and is just the fourth player to record both 1,000+ points and 300+ assists.
Borowiak finished the night with 19 points on 8-12 shooting along with 5 assists. Karlee Morris (SO/Ypsilant, MI) notched a double-double with 10 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Mia Long (FR/Ann Arbor, MI) led the team with 7 assists to go with her 12 points and Brianna Rowe (JR/Southfield, MI) rounded out the top scorers with 13.
The Cardinals struggled to take care of the ball early and turned it over four times in their first six possessions. Sharp shooting brought them back into the game and a Rowe three at 2:05 gave Concordia their first lead at 13-12. Rowe made three triples in the first quarter as the team shot 50% from the field and led 21-14.
Concordia had 8 fast break points in the first half and Rowe picked up another right after the break as she and Morris combined for a 10-0 run to start the third quarter. The run ended with the Cardinals up 47-31 at 6:02 and the team carried the double-digit lead into the fourth.
The final frame began with Borowiak finding Zhana Randolph (SR/Waterford, MI) for three and the next time down the pair teamed up again with Randolph hitting Borowiak for triple and a game-high 18-point advantage.
The Jaguars of Governor State inched their way back and came within six at 2:34. Michelle Murnen (JR/Toledo, OH) gave the Cardinals back the momentum with a three-point play to make it 69-60 and ignite a final burst to close out the victory for CUAA.
Concordia will play North Central College, who beat Roosevelt University in the championship game tomorrow afternoon at 4:00 p.m. EST.
