(Grand Rapids, MI) The Concordia women's golf team under the direction of first year head coach Stephanie Squires, competed in the third and final WHAC Jamboree last weekend. The WHAC Jamboree was hosted by Aquinas College at the LE Kauffman Golf Club. The Cardinals placed 10th at the event, but saw a significant improvement in scores compared to other jamborees this fall.
Coach Squires was pleased with the girls' effort and improvement. "This was our best tournament for our individuals and as a whole team. They players are getting a lot better with their shorter inside 100 yard shots, decision making, and putting. In the end, it is the small things that are all coming together that make the biggest difference and it really reflected that in our scores this weekend."
The Cardinals were led by Alex Homann (FR/South Bend, IN) who scored an 88 on day one of the competition. Homann's score was her lowest round as a Cardinal and would go on to post a two day total of 188. This qualified her for 34th overall in the tournament which was her highest finish this fall. In day two, team captain, Daniela Perez (JR/Belleville, MI) paced the Cardinals with a 95. The Cardinals two day team total came in at 843 which was the lowest for the team this fall by over 20 strokes.
The Cardinals will compete in the Redhawk Fall Invitational at Canebrake Golf Club in Athens, Alabama. Though it is not a WHAC event Coach Squires is looking forward to the team competing one last time this fall before shifting gears towards the offseason and spring. "For the Redhawk Invitational I will be focusing the team on the short chips around the green and getting off the tee well. There is a little more water on Canebrake Golf Club's course so we will continue to stay focused on making good decisions to give ourselves the best possible chance for good sores like last weekend.
As the Michigan weather shifts to winter, Coach Squires has several goals for the team as preparation for the spring season begins. In the off-season, we will be conditioning and lifting to stay in shape. I will be working with each player to improve their confidence, distance, and consistency of their clubs as we look forward to our first spring tournament in St. Augustine, Florida.
