(River Forest, IL) - The Concordia Women's Basketball team suffered a tough loss in Saturday's CIT championship game against the Bulldogs from Concordia Nebraska. The Cardinals came into play as the 6th ranked team in NAIA DII while the Bulldogs sat one ahead of the Cardinals at #5. CUAA would finish out the tournament with a 20-4 record for the season overall, while CUN would improve to 22-2 respectively.
The Cardinals kept the Bulldogs at bay for nearly the entire first half of Saturday's contest, spending less than two minutes of play behind and never trailing by more than three points. Ann Arbor gathered momentum during the final minutes of the first half and accumulated a seven-point lead (37-30) that would carry over into the second part of the game. The Bulldogs would quickly eliminate the Cardinal advantage by scoring eight unanswered points to start off the second half. The Cardinals had four straight turnovers to spark the Bulldog run. However, the Cardinals would then hold the Bulldogs to a modest lead before pulling ahead once again in the 11th minute. The Cardinals would then go on a 17-4 run to go up 63-55 with seven minutes left on the clock. But a 10-1 run by Nebraska in the next three minutes would give CUAA a deficit they wouldn't recover from. The Bulldogs eventually beat the Cardinals 72-68 and become this year's CIT winners.
The game's top scorers included Amber Kistler from Nebraska, who mounted an impressive 26 points, while the Cardinals' own Kortni Ellsworth had 16 points and was named to the Women's All-Tournament Team. The Women's Basketball team comes back to play at home on Wednesday, February 1, in another huge game as they host Davenport University.
