(Ann Arbor, MI) - The postseason awards for men's soccer were released by the WHAC on Saturday and the Cards were well-represented. Mikey Erickson and Cory Briggs earned 2nd Team All-Conference honors. Briggs was the only freshman on the list, Erickson the only goalkeeper. Sophomore midfielder Brendon Quinn was named Champion of Character for the Cardinals and was an All-Conference Honorable Mention selection. It was nice to see some familiar names on the list and this is definitely a good sign for the Cardinals moving forward. Keep up the good work!

(Grand Rapids, MI) - The Cardinal men's soccer team ended its 2011 season on Saturday with an opening round match at Aquinas College. The Cards had a tough task ahead of them, facing off against the 2nd place team in the WHAC. Scoring started relatively early in this match, Aquinas taking the lead in the 13th minute. The Saints would extend their lead 10 minutes later from a header in the Concordia penalty box. The Cards had a few chances in the first half, with Yonathon Zeleke hitting the post on two occasions. The score would remain at 2-0 going into halftime.

In the second half, the Cardinals caught a tough break near the goal and would go down 3-0 on an own-goal. Aquinas would extend their lead in the 70th and 82nd minutes. At the final whistle the score would read 5-0 in favor of the Saints. The game was well-fought, but the Aquinas attack proved to be too much to handle. The Cards, who are still a relatively young team, will continue building in the offseason and look for some new recruits for next fall.

(Ann Arbor, MI) - This Wednesday the Concordia Men's Soccer team hosted Siena Heights for their final game of the regular season. It was an intense game, with both teams looking for a win before the playoffs. Concordia struggled in the first half, with the wet conditions making it difficult to find their passing game. The defense, led by Cory Briggs and Jay Krause, held strong and the teams would go into halftime tied at 0. In the second half it would be the Cards who struck first in the 48th minute. Brad Lyons found the back of the net on a diving header from a great cross by Zain Qureshi. The Cardinals would remain in the lead until the 68th minute, when Siena Heights tied it up by exploiting a gap in the defensive line due to a brief injury. The Cards were determined to regain their lead, and played well for much of the second half. The problems started in the 82nd minute, when Siena Heights was able to get on the end of a loose ball in the box from a free kick. They would take the 2-1 lead late in the game, but the Cardinals kept the pressure on, pushing until the very last second, but were unable to find the equalizer. The final score would remain at 2-1 in favor of Siena Heights.

(Grand Rapids, MI) - The Cardinal Soccer team headed out to Grand Rapids, MI this past Saturday to face off against Cornerstone University. The Golden Eagles are currently in 1st place in the WHAC.  The Cards came out determined to put an end to their losing streak. The first half was well-fought by both teams, and the Cardinal defensive line did well to snuff out any Cornerstone attacks. Despite numerous chances on both sides of the field, the teams would go into the halftime break tied at 0. The second half was much like the first, though Concordia struggled at first. Luckily goalkeeper Mikey Erickson was solid in net with 7 saves on the match. Things went downhill for the Cards in the 74th minute, when Cornerstone was awarded a Penalty Kick. The Golden Eagles capitalized on this chance and took a 1-0 lead. Despite falling behind, the Cards were still determined to get back into the game. The next 15 minutes was all Concordia, with the Cardinals applying a high level of pressure on the Cornerstone defense. The Cards fought until the very last minute, but could not manage to even the score, and the game would end at 1-0. Concordia will return to the training ground and look to tighten a few things up before this Wednesday when they host the Saints of Siena Heights. The game will be played at 11:30 am at Rummel Field. This will be the senior day for the Cards, so come help us honor our seniors and support our men's soccer team in their final home game this season!

(Grand Rapids, MI) - The Concordia Men's Soccer Team headed to Grand Rapids on Saturday to face off against the Davenport Panthers who were currently 2nd in the WHAC. The Cards struck first when senior Yonathan Zeleke finished off a great pass from Brad Lyons in the 25th minute. Concordia would keep the lead for 5 minutes until Davenport tied it up at 1 by finding a gap in the Cardinal defense. The game would remain tied for most of the first half. The Panthers would take the lead very late in the first half. With only 0.9 seconds left on the clock, a stray Davenport cross found the top corner of the net. Concordia would go into halftime down by a goal but not discouraged.

In the second half Davenport extended their lead in the 52nd minute on a cross that was just out of the reach of the Cardinal defense. Just 7 minutes later, however, Yonathan Zeleke would score his second goal of the match with an assist from Jordan Anderson to bring the Cards within 1 again. The Panthers answered quickly, scoring off of a rebound just 3 minutes later. The final 30 minutes of the match were exciting, with Concordia applying high pressure and showing great determination. Unfortunately they were unable to come back and the game would end at 4-2 in favor of the Panthers. Goalkeeper Mikey Erickson kept the Cards in this one, making some unbelievable saves in the match. The Cardinals will head out to Cornerstone on Saturday, October 22nd for their next match. Go Cards!

(Wixom, MI) - The Concordia Men's Soccer team faced off against conference rival Madonna University Wednesday at Total Sports Complex in Wixom, MI. They came out looking for a win against the Crusader, but the end result would be tough to swallow. The Cardinals played beautiful soccer in the first half, dominating in possession and scoring chances. Justin Shultz and Jordan Anderson did a good job of controlling the midfield for Concordia. The Cards were solid defensively, quickly snuffing out any attack from Madonna. The teams would go into halftime tied at zero.

The score would remain level until the 76th minute when the Crusaders scored on a shot from inside the box, making the score 1-0. The Cards would have a chance to tie the game just 6 minutes later, but the goal was disallowed due to an offside call. Madonna would extend their lead with another goal in the 84th minute that resulted from a corner kick. Despite the 2-0 difference so late in the game, the Cards did not give up. They found inspiration in the 89th minute when senior Yonathan Zeleke netted a free kick from just outside the penalty box. The hope was short-lived, however, as Madonna sealed its victory with a third goal just 20 seconds later. The game would end at 3-1 in favor of the Crusaders. The Cards' next match will be at Davenport University this Saturday, October 15th at 7:00pm. Good luck Cards!

(Ann Arbor, MI) - The Cardinal Men's Soccer team began conference play this past Saturday when they hosted the Warriors of Indiana Institute of Technology. The Cards were anxious to begin conference play coming off of a heartbreaking loss to nonconference match verse Madonna last Wednesday. Indiana Tech started the game off strong, opening the scoring in just the 13th minute on a counterattack. The Cards shook it off and got back into the game, trading chances with the Warriors. Tech extended their lead in the 29th minute, capitalizing on a broken play in the box. The Cards would not be discouraged, however, and got their offense into gear. At the halftime break, the Cardinals would be down by two goals, despite leading the first half in shots on goal. In the second half it would be the Cards who struck first, with Pat Gates finishing off a beautiful cross from Cardinals' junior Kyle Winningham. This goal put Concordia back into the game, but they were met by a surging Warrior offense. The defense held up, and Mikey Erickson was solid in net, refusing to let up another goal. However, the Warriors put the game out of reach in the 83rd minute off of a well-executed corner kick and the game would end at 3 to 1 in favor of Indiana Tech. Despite the final score, the Cardinals are still improving and will find themselves in the mix as the season progresses. Their next match is the Homecoming game on October 8th, when the Cardinals will host Aquinas College at 2:30pm. Let's go Cards!

Concordia was looking to end their preseason on a positive note, and came out ready to play. The Cardinals started with a strong attack, controlled by sophomore midfielder Brendon Quinn. Despite 9 shots on goal in the first half, the Cards couldn't find the back of the net. The teams went into the break tied at 0-0. The score would remain tied until the 83rd minute, when Madonna caught the Cardinal defense off guard and slipped the ball past keeper Mikey Erickson. (Grand Rapids, MI) - The Men's Soccer team took the long drive to Grand Rapids this past Saturday to face off against the Saints of Aquinas College. Aquinas is a WHAC team, but this was not a conference match because the two will meet again later on this season. The Cardinals went into the game looking to see where they stand against last year's WHAC Champions. Despite the final score, the Cards looked good and put up a fight. The Cardinals were solid defensively, not allowing a significant opportunity on goal until the 37th minute. The first goal of the game came in the 44th minute, when the ball took a deflection off a Cardinal defender, leaving an Aquinas striker with an open shot in the box. The Cards would go into halftime only down by a goal and looking to come out strong in the second half. However, the Cardinals came out to a slow start in the second half, allowing goals in the 55th and 59th minutes. After these goals, the defense got it together and held off the Aquinas attack. The Cards would get a few chances of their own, but could not put the ball in the net. Overall, the Cards are showing improvement, and did well against the surging Aquinas offense. The Cardinals will look to be contenders when conference play begins next month. Concordia will finish their preseason schedule this Wednesday, September 28th when they travel to conference rival Madonna University for another nonconference match. Good luck guys!

(Southfield, MI) - The Concordia Men's Soccer Team headed to Lawrence Technological University on Wednesday in search of their first win of the season, and they found it. The Cardinals got off to a slow start, allowing a goal in the first 15 seconds of the game on a broken play defensively. This mishap was a wake-up call for the Cards, and they answered quickly. Cardinal newcomer Zain Qureshi scored 3 goals in 20 minutes to make the score 3-1. This hat trick makes five goals in six games for Qureshi, who is quickly becoming an impact player for the Cards. The Blue Devils weren't ready to give up, however, and they managed to tie the game at 3 just before halftime. Concordia came out strong in the second half, and junior Pat Gates scored the go-ahead goal just 10 minutes in. After the goal the Cards switched on the defense and coasted to a 4-3 victory. The Cardinals' keeper Mikey Erickson kept the Cardinals in front with an outstanding 10 saves in the second half alone. The Cards will look for a repeat performance on September 24th when they visit Aquinas College. Good luck Cards!

(Detroit, MI) - The Concordia Men's Soccer team headed to Marygrove College this past Saturday to face off against the Mustangs for the second time this season. The Cards were short on players again, with senior Yonathan Zeleke out of the lineup due to a hamstring injury. The start of the game looked good for Concordia when Zain Qureshi ripped a shot into the back of the net in the 4th minute. The Cardinals kept the pressure on for a little while, but started to fall apart when Marygrove tied the game in the 30th minute. After this goal it was all Marygrove for the rest of the match. The Cardinals couldn't seem to get their offense together and were all over the place defensively. The game would end at 4-1 in favor of Marygrove. This just wasn't Concordia's day. CUAA 0, Davenport 1

(Saturday November 6th, Grand Rapids, MI) - The Cards finished their 2010 campaign on Saturday with a first round loss to Davenport University in the WHAC playoffs. The game was played at 7:00pm underneath the lights on a turf field in Grand Rapids. The Cardinals fought the Panthers to the very last whistle and gave a very talented team a run for their money. The Panthers this season are 13-6 and are an extremely good team but the Cards held strong and stayed within striking distance the entire game. At half the score was 0-0 but Davenport got on the board in the second half and that was all they needed as the game ended 1-0.

Assistant Coach Erik Schultz stated that "I am really proud of how well our guys played today. We had a lot of guys playing out of position due to our injury plagued season, but the guys stepped up tonight, especially Justin Schultz and Brendon Quinn. Schultz, Quinn, and the rest of our defense neutralized the potent Panther attacked and what they couldn't stop Mikey Erickson did. Mikey played outstanding. He made several keys saves to keep the game close for us and to give our offense a chance. I'm really proud of our effort."
